Dorothy Hudson Elliott, accomplished educator

Dorothy Hudson Elliott, 100, of Rehoboth Beach, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Brandywine Assisted Living, Rehoboth Beach. She was born in Laurel, Sept. 26, 1913, to the late Edgar Lee and Myrtle (German) Hudson.

Mrs. Elliott graduated from Laurel High School and the Women’s College of the University of Delaware. She married attorney Lawrence C. Elliott in 1939, and lived in Georgetown, where they raised three daughters.

Dorothy taught elementary school in Laurel and Georgetown for more than 30 years. Her father taught her to play the violin when she was very young, and she went on to become an accomplished violinist. She played with the Wilmington Symphony as a college student, later the Salisbury Symphony, and other groups throughout her adult life. She also directed the junior choir at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for many years.

“Mrs. Elliott” is remembered by scores of Sussex Countians for leading them through the halls of Georgetown School playing “Flight of the Bumblebee” and carols at Christmas. Proud of her family’s amateur radio expertise, she earned her own radio license, W3IRR, when she was 17. She is remembered for her happy smile and fun-loving disposition, her high energy, and her fierce loyalty to friends and family.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Judge Elliott, in 1975; her brother, Roland L. Hudson; and sister Jean Magri. She is survived by her daughters, Sabra Larkin and husband David of Cherry Plain, N.Y., Mary Ann Elliott of Lewes and Grace Messner and husband Blair of Wilmington.

Funeral Services will be Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 122 E. Pine St., Georgetown, with burial in the adjacent churchyard. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes, Dodd-Carey Chapel, Georgetown.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 122 E. Pine Street, Georgetown, DE 19947.
