Steppin' Up To The Plate

Enjoy the beach with a Mexican accent!

June 26, 2014

It’s a proven scientific fact that Mexican restaurants are close to the top of the want list when it comes to comfort food, and there’s no shortage of Mexican joints here in the Rehoboth Beach area. So clip this article and tape it to your burro in the event of an enchilada emergency.

Three of the old reliables here at the beach are Dos Locos, Mariachi and La Tonalteca. Dos Locos has all the Tex-Mex goodies – many with fresh lobster, shrimp and crab – plus the interactive experience of Stonegrilling. Imagine cooking your very own shrimp on a 700 degree stone! Not for little kids, but great for us big kids.

Yolanda Pineda’s Mariachi combines Salvadoran, Mexican and Spanish cuisines. Tamales, handmade pupusas (with spicy slaw!) and queso fundido share the menu with such regional delights as Mariscos Saltados and Pescado Criollo. Sit on Mariachi’s front porch and enjoy a view of the Atlantic.

La Tonalteca’s huge menu contains something for everybody in the Tex-Mex dept. However, a closer look reveals hidden gems like a particularly good mole sauce and chilaquiles. In my opinion, La Tonalteca serves one of the best salsas around.

The new kid in town is Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria. Latino street food replaces traditional Tex-Mex with Mexican street corn, ceviche, and tacos made with goat, pork belly and even apple-scrapple. Papa’s also sports the treehouse where you can nibble on a ‘shroom & veggie quesadilla and sip a mammoth margarita as the sun sets.

Papa may be the new kid in town, but Modern Mixture is the littlest. Once you locate the bright orange awning, Leo Cabrera’s cool and crunchy nopalito salads, creamy tamales and hot grilled tortas will win you over.

Gladys Fernandez’ Cilantro offers two outdoor dining areas – the secret garden in the back (private and quiet) and the see & be seen hi-tops on the sidewalk. Enjoy both with a frosty Dos Equis and continuous appetizers.

No Rehoboth vacation is complete without visiting our favorite Greexican, Aquiles Demerutis. His El Dorado restaurant on the highway serves up tacos loaded with fresh mahi and shrimp. The kicker is the fixins’ bar with salsas, sauces and toppings that range from the delightfully mild to downright fiery.

Find all these spicy spots by clicking “Cheap Eats” at RehobothFoodie.com or by mapping their locations on the iPhone and Android app, Rehoboth In My Pocket.

So fear not! Your favorite comfort foods are here at the beach, waiting to fill you up with savory goodness and give you the perfect excuse to order a second margarita.
