Benbow edges Long in Ivy 5K

Race attracts 331 runners to Dewey
July 5, 2014

Enos Benbow trailed Brett Long by only a few strides as they rounded the side of the Bottle & Cork and headed down Dagsworthy Avenue toward the finish line at Ivy Restaurant. Those strides quickly turned into just a few steps, which turned into a lead, as Benbow overtook Long in the final 10th of a mile to win the Ivy 5K June 29 in Dewey Beach.

Benbow turned it on for that short distance, blowing past the eventual runner-up to collect yet another first-place trophy in a time of 17:02. Long came in just behind in 17:06.9.

Three hundred and thirty one runners completed the 12th annual race, with 198 breaking the 30-minute mark.

Jen Cawthern, another familiar face in the beach running scene, won the women's race with a time of 20:40.3, with Jennifer Boutin of Wilmington just behind at 20:54.3.

The race attracted runners from 16 different states and Washington, D.C., but the award for longest distance traveled goes to Norwegian Finn Eirik Johansen, who clocked an impressive time of 20:06.7, which was good enough for ninth place overall.
