Local club competitions fill early summer calendar
As the Cape Region greeted the official start of summer, the area’s golf clubs were busy with several popular tournaments, some with special beneficiaries.
Kings Creek Country Club held its 24th annual Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament June 20-21. Member Brian Andrews and partner Paul Andrews won the Overall Champions category.
Tyson Mayers, now affiliated with American Classic Golf Club near Midway, teamed up with Steve Wheeler for the Gross title. The pair shot one under par for the 45-hole event, in which 120 golfers participated.
The tournament used a round robin better ball format, with five 9-hole matches to determine 10 flight winners, who then played a playoff round.
For the playoff, five flight winners played a 3-hole alternate shot format, playing holes 1, 18, and then 9 as a par three. Five other flight winners played holes 18, 9 as a par three, and then hole 1.
The Mayers/Wheeler and Andrews/Andrews teams won their respective draws, leading to a sudden-death playoff. The Andrews team took advantage of a half-stroke handicap on the 18th hole and made a 12-footer to win the tournament.
Kings Creek head golf professional Kevin Wiest said, “The weather for this year’s invitational could not have been any better. What a change from our experience battling Tropical Storm Andrea at last year’s tournament.”

• Olympic Club Flight: Dennis Connelly and Bill Whitty
• Winged Foot Flight: Chris Kara-Eneff and Philip Kara-Eneff.
The RBCC Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association held their 12th Annual Black & Gold Event June 25 to benefit Kody’s Kids. This nonprofit organization supplies basic items such as diapers, formula, and clothing to newborns in need in Sussex County; for details, go to www.kodyskids.org.
The match play format used One Best Ball scoring for each two-person team. The Gold Team defeated Black 23-10, with team points awarded for the front nine, back nine, and overall.
The winning Gold Team included Kim Stockson, Linda Welch, Kathy Curry, Gigi Lank, Carol Smith, Beth Carpenter, Perry Drevo, Elise Coar, Carol Wetherhold, Kathy Carroll, Barbara Collins, Diane Strickler, Bee Ekdahl, Joan Crowley, Gayle Truitt, Ella Alexander, Karen Storms, Lyn Webster, Doris Rogers, Jeanne Allan, Ann Cunningham, and Carol Ann Medd.
The Kings Creek Country Club Ladies 18 Hole Golf League played a Far Out competition June 26. No special brownies were involved.
Julie Dickson won the first flight, with Ruth Lauver taking second and Jeannine Doanne earning the third spot.
Brenda Butterfield won first place in the second flight, as Rosanne Smith finished in second and Sheree Mixell took third.
Rita Musi won the third flight, with Trish Galioto in second and Terry Derville in third. Faye Slatcher won the closest to the pin contest on the 16th hole, at 20 feet four inches.
The Kings Creek 9 Hole Ladies played together June 26. Sue Eisenbrey won first place, Jeanne Drake came in second, Noreen Buzerak was third, and Helene Guilfoy took fourth place. Pat DeVoll was only 2-feet-10-inches away on the 13th hole, winning closest to the pin honors.
On June 30, the Kings Creek Ladies 9 Hole event saw Eisenbrey again winning first place. Susie Shevock came in second, Drake was third, and Kathy Nave finished in fourth place. Drake also won the closest to the pin contest, with a shot to 8-feet-10-inches on the 16th hole.
Great score at Rookery North
John Cole, a low handicapper at The Rookery, shot a near-course record 63 at Rookery North June 29, from the white tees.
Pete Oakley, the Senior British Open winner and former Shawnee CC head golf pro, holds the unofficial course record with a pair of 63s. He says he made those scores from the blue tees in the 1980s during casual play. That is why those great scores on a challenging par-70 course are considered unofficial.
