Good Sam Club announces camping weekend Sept. 5-7

July 15, 2014

The Delaware Good Sam Club announces its 2014 Delaware State Samboree Camping Event at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington Friday-Sunday, Sept. 5-7, with an early bird day Sept. 4.

What is a Samboree? Once a year, the Good Sam Chapters of Delaware gather at the Delaware State Fairgrounds and host a weekend of fun, fellowship and camaraderie. Campers do not have to be Good Sam members to attend. The camping event is open to all campers, whether they camp in a tent, travel trailer, fifth wheel or motor home. The weekend includes entertainment, seminars, games, food, a flea/craft market, a tour, ice cream social, morning hospitalities and camping.  There are also raffles, crafts, contests, vendors and much more.

The club takes its name from the term “Good Samaritan” and came to life in 1966 when cartoonist E.C. Bilsland Jr. sketched a dark-haired character with a broad smile and a halo to personify the spirit of Good Samaritan RVers. A group of RVers began placing Good Samaritan stickers on the bumpers of their vehicles while on the road to let fellow RV families know they were there to help.

Over 2,000 active chapters throughout the United States and Canada support hundreds of local charities and participate in civic projects such as Adopt-A-Highway, National Clean Up Day, Habitat For Humanity and many more. In addition, each year thousands of Good Sams attend Samborees, which are held in most states and include activities such as seminars, entertainment, craft classes, ice cream socials, dinners and other events.

The Delaware State Samboree has a host of fun, themed activities planned including a theme costume contest, RV decorating contest and theme basket contest.  Several other activities including games like Bean Bag Baseball, a Friday morning tour to local Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, ice cream social, morning hospitality, games Friday night, craft & flea market, Chinese auction Saturday, ladies' social, seminars, Samgo, optional dinner Saturday evening catered by Smith’s Family Restaurant, and door prizes.

Live entertainment Thursday evening will be provided by by Randy Lee Ashcraft and the Saltwater Cowboys, and Saturday evening by Go With The Flo Band. On Sunday morning, Ministering the Word Through Music will be presented by John and Dody Martin.

All campers are invited to attend the Delaware State Samboree. Registration forms for the event are online at www.degoodsam.com. Vendors registration forms are also on the website, or email degoodsam@gmail.com to have forms mailed.
