Maryland author Richard Seldin will sign his book, “Pearls Beneath The Rind” at 7 p.m., Friday, July 25, at Bethany Beach Books. The book is coauthored by Richard’s sister, Carole R. Seldin-Bolinski, a poet and fiction writer.
Many siblings overcome estranged family relationships, but few decide to express this emotional advance by collaborating on a book of poems. “Pearls Beneath The Rind” invites the reader to enter the world of an older brother and younger sister of different character and lifestyle. The book demonstrates the divergent ways two siblings have experienced themselves, their relationships and environment. Their cooperative act in writing it affirms that conflicted sibling relationships can substantially improve.
Kirkus Reviews has described the book as a “smart, unusual collection of poetry with honed, pleasant surprises.” Poet Michaela Carter, has written of it: “In this duet the voices of brother and sister alternate to form a book as unique in its music as in its silences. Honest and mature, 'Pearls Beneath The Rind' lifts and anchors, shimmies and sways. It’s a joy to read.”
Richard Seldin is a freelance writer who has published short fiction and nonfiction in English and Chinese and translated Chinese novellas and short stories into English. Seldin’s novel, “Below the Line in Beijing” is scheduled to be published this winter. Seldin-Bolinski has published short mystery stories, flash fiction and poetry. She has won the Oregon State Poetry Association’s new poets category for “The Car.” She is currently working on another book of poetry, “I Don’t Want To Die In Chino Valley.”
