Delmarva Christian's Williams named All-American

July 21, 2014

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has selected Delmarva Christian High School’s Amanda Williams as an NSCAA High School Scholar All-American. Williams has been officially named as “one of the nation’s best on the field and in the classroom,” according to a letter from the NSCAA. The NSCAA saw a record-high number of nominations submitted from across the nation this year, but only 101 athletes were awarded the prestigious honor.

“It’s awesome, but at the same time humbling. It feels good, because I put a lot of time and work into soccer,” said Williams. She had much to smile about as she reflected on the lessons she learned on the soccer field and how they will apply to her life when she is not in uniform. The two key things she learned were perseverance and the value of believing. Her experience in the DCHS soccer program taught her to have goals, work hard and see things through until they are accomplished. There is a firm connection between Williams’ work ethic and her faith. “I would pray [during games] that God would renew my mind and help me focus. He did. He helped me to love the other team when they were ahead or after I was fouled. I want to give him glory for that,” Williams said.

Scott Esposito, coach of the DCHS Lady Royals, was excited at the news of Williams’ selection. When asked why Williams deserved the honor, Esposito said, “Amanda is worthy to be recognized on a national level because of the effort she brings both to the classroom and the soccer field. Determined, disciplined and always working hard to become better. She does it all for his glory!”

Watching Williams' involvement throughout her years at Delmarva Christian allowed Principal Mike Vonhof to have a broad view of her talents and work ethic. “It is exciting to see Amanda's hard work and commitment to her sport and team recognized at so many different levels. Through all of the recognition that she has received, she has remained humble and given the glory to God the for work he has done in her life. I have no doubt that Amanda will continue to exhibit these same characteristics of humility, hard work, and determination in all that she does.”

Graduation from Delmarva Christian High School will not end Williams’ soccer career. She will start a new season with Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. Her practices in the Shenandoah Valley begin in August. With the hope of eventually becoming an astronaut, Williams will be pursuing a double major - secondary education and biblical studies - before returning to Sussex County to fulfill the obligation of her teaching grant. Truly she will need to draw from lessons learned on the soccer field to achieve her goals, but hard work is no deterrent to someone who has witnessed its value.

Delmarva Christian High School is a nondenominational Christian high school serving students in Sussex, Kent, Wicomico, Dorchester and Worcester counties.
