McGuiness right decision for Rehoboth

July 10, 2014

It was a tough year for fireworks.

Several well-intentioned city officials seemingly knocked over a hornet’s nest when they expressed concerns about parking for the July Fourth celebration in Rehoboth Beach. Others raised doubts about going ahead with plans for the display.

During the Bandstand concert following the fireworks, Sherman Ward, one of the lead vocalists for the Funsters, asked the SRO audience whether or not Ocean City was doing fireworks that evening; he got a resounding No! He got another No! when he raised the same question about the beach towns in southern New Jersey. And then he asked, “How ‘bout Rehoboth Beach?” There was a thunderous Yes! from the enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.

Our community wasn’t just lucky; we were fortunate. We were fortunate to have wise decision makers at Rehoboth Beach Main Street, the nonprofit that organizes the annual event. And while I don’t have firsthand knowledge, I am confident to say that Kathy McGuiness - the RBMS Fireworks chair - was a moving force and provided wise counsel during the decision-making process. This was her style when she was a commissioner for the city: working behind the scenes, consensus building, out of the spotlight, and ready to deliberate toe-to-toe, yet intelligently about the tough issues.

The right decision was made to go ahead with the fireworks display. We’re glad that decision was made! And now, you have the opportunity to make the right decision. Vote Kathy McGuiness for commissioner. You’ll be glad you did!
