Sussex Habitat for Humanity executive director to speak about rich history of the worldwide ministry July 17

July 10, 2014

Kevin Gilmore will take the audience through the history of and worldwide movement of The Spirituality of Habitat for Humanity at the Summer Spirituality Series Thursday, July 17. The weekly presentations are held in the Parish Hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, at 211 Mulberry St. in Lewes, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The presentation will review the rich history of Habitat for Humanity and how this worldwide ministry started in south Georgia and grew into a movement helping over 800,000 families secure simple, decent and affordable housing.  In Sussex County 90 families have purchased homes built by Habitat.

Gilmore has served with Habitat for Humanity since 1992.  He started as a volunteer with his campus chapter at Elon University in North Carolina.  After college, he worked with Habitat International at their headquarters in Americus, Ga.  From there he went on to serve with Habitat for four years in Guatemala.  After earning his master’s of public administration at the University of Delaware, Gilmore came to work with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity in 2004 as their first paid employee.  He grew up in Milford and is pleased to be in Sussex County serving the community which nurtured him as a youth.

Each Thursday night, through Aug. 28, expert presenters will engage participants in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Fellowship and locally owned Kings ice cream will follow each presentation. They invite and encourage everyone to attend these free sessions, which are designed for reflection and dialogue. It is a chance to learn more about a fascinating topic and engage in subsequent discussion.

In addition to providing spiritual resources for those seeking greater understanding of their own religious, or learning about others, Seekers uses the net proceeds from their store to help those in need, including the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, Doctors without Borders, work in Haiti and Centro Infantil in San Miguel de Allende.
