Lifeguard squads from 18 East Coast beaches took part in the United States Lifesaving Association Eastern Regional lifeguard competition at Rehoboth Beach July 9 in events such as 4-by-100 soft sand relay sprints, soft sand 2K run, 400 meter surf swim, landline rescue race, beach flags, swim rescue race, run-swim-run and paddle board race.
All contestants were competing for a trip to the USLA Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. Scores were as follows: First place, Smith Point, 174 points; second place, Rehoboth Beach, 131; third place, Long Beach, 91; fourth, Fire Island, 70; fifth, Mammoth County, 60; sixth, Sea Girt, 55; seventh, Dewey, 50; eighth, Sea Colony, 42; ninth, Bethany Beach, 34; 10th, Ocean City, N.J., 31; 11th, South Bethany, 28; 12th, Delaware State Parks, 26; 13th, Virginia Beach, 22; 14th, Jones Beach, 17; 15th, Long Branch, 14; 16th, Fenwick Island, 12; 17th, Bradley Beach, 10 (tie); 17th Ocean Beach, 10; 18th, Middlesex Beach, 4.
