'Saving Mr. Banks' comes to Cinema by the Surf July 24

July 19, 2014

The 2014 Cinema By the Surf summer outdoor film series begins with “Saving Mr. Banks” Thursday, July 24, starting at dusk (8:15-8:30 p.m.) at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.

This film series for all ages is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the City of Rehoboth Beach.

Starring Oscar-winning actors Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, “Saving Mr. Banks” is the previously untold story of how the beloved Disney classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the big screen. When Walt Disney’s daughters were young, he promised to turn their favorite children’s book, written by English author P.L. Travers, into a movie.

A 20-year pursuit for the book rights ensues with Mrs. Travers (as she insists on being called) refusing to relinquish them. In need of cash, she reconsiders Disney’s offer and we witness a two-week time period where Travers and Disney butt heads during a torturous development process that would produce one of the best-loved children’s films of all time.

This event is free to the public. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit www.rehobothfilm.com or www.rehobothbandstand.com.
