M&T Bank Delaware recently announced a $5,000 grant to Primeros Pasos Early Learning Center in Georgetown. Primeros Pasos (First Steps) is a nonprofit which currently provides preschool education and day care for approximately 20 students 2-5 years old at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The M&T Bank grant will be used to help build a new facility on Savannah Road in Georgetown which will expand capacity to about 70 students.

Approximately 95 percent of the students at this preschool are from low-income families with working parents. The primary goal for Primeros Pasos is to prepare and enable its students to be highly successful when they begin kindergarten and school. Primeros Pasos has earned a 4 Stars rating from the State of Delaware, reflecting its commitment to provide a strong curriculum for its students.

The Board of Directors for Primeros Pasos is in the midst of a $1.3 million capital campaign to fund this project. Board President Sally Beaumont said, “We wish to especially thank M&T Bank for this generous contribution which reflects the bank’s commitment to invest in the future by enabling our children to succeed. This is the third gift we have received from M&T in the past three years for a total of $13,000. ”

M&T Bank provides a full range of banking services with 15 branches throughout Sussex County. When presenting the check, Steve Loughren Jr., manager of the M&T Georgetown location, said, “This grant from our bank will help us ensure that more Sussex students are ready and able to be successful academically and become productive citizens.
