Sierra Moon raises over $1,000 for skate park

Grant Willis, owner of Sierra Moon Surf & Skate, has wanted to see a skate park in Rehoboth for a long time. “Skating is a great way for kids to be active outside. It’s a healthy activity,” said Willis. When Epworth Skate Project started raising funds to build a concrete park, Willis came up with an idea to help fund it. Collaborating with Sign-A-Rama, Willis created a sticker he sold in his store.

Longtime Sierra Moon employee and avid skateboarder Teague Hastings made continuous efforts to  sell the stickers beginning in September 2013. Hastings educated a lot of customers about what was going on at Epworth and Sierra Moon’s efforts to support it. Their initiative paid off for the Epworth Skate Project.

At $3 each, with all proceeds going to the skate fund, sticker sales totaled $1,339. “This was a true grassroots effort, and they did a spectacular job,” said Skate Project member Susan Selph.

Construction of the park is underway and is expected to be complete sometime in August. Contractor Evergreen Skateparks of Portland, Ore., is on schedule and making good progress. The park, designed by Jesse Clayton, owner of 5th Pocket Inc, was created to engage skaters of all ability levels. Its features include a bowl, china bank, ledges, quarter pipes, and rails.
