Milton Wellness Center grows, expands staff

Pop-up business adds acupuncturist, massage therapy specialist
August 21, 2014

Milton Wellness Center recently added two new practitioners, taking a big step toward realizing the goal of offering holistic healthcare in Sussex County.

As owners and primary operators of the Milton Wellness Center, Dr. Bill Sheardon and his wife, Mary Van House, have been offering sports psychology mentoring, yoga and counseling for life transitions in downtown Milton since their business opened in November 2013.

The success in this new enterprise, made possible through the Delaware Economic Development Office's Project Pop-Up, persuaded the owners to grow their business, they said.

"The ways we practice and the physical therapies we do all have the mind, body and spirit of the individual in common," Shearer said.

New recruits to the staff at Milton Wellness Center include a community acupuncture therapist and massage specialist.

"I think that holistic approach is what wellness is," Van House said.

The initial pop-up grant provided Milton Wellness Center with space overlooking the Broadkill River -- adjacent to Vintage Pasta  -- rent-free for three months with the option to continue leasing the space.

Acupuncturist Lauren Mund said the center's approach to community well-being fit well with her practice. As a community acupuncturist, Mund said, she wants to bring the alternative Chinese needle-based therapy to 80 percent of the population.

Ideally, she would like to treat clients often enough to make a difference through effective and affordable group therapy sessions.

"This is a community acupuncture practice, which is different from the private model," she said. "The practice of Chinese medicine has always approached the well-being of the individual by looking at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of living."

Mund said she will offer community acupuncture at the center Monday through Friday for those who would like to use the Chinese energy therapy to detoxify their bodies, resolve addictions or achieve a better balance.

As a massage specialist, Ginny Green offers another aspect of wellness. Trained in a variety of traditional massage techniques, she promotes healing through reducing stress, using varied techniques including reiki.

As this pop-up business continues to evolve, Sheardon said he hopes Milton Wellness Center will not only provide an outlet for those already acquainted with these approaches but also offer new opportunities for people to learn about therapies they have not yet tried.

"The beauty of having everything in one place is that we can address the multifaceted nature of the human being," Sheardon said.
