In July, Milton Elementary School held a family engagement picnic for current and former students and parents who participated in the school's Strengthening Families Program in the last five years.

The picnic was a celebration of the school's parents and students actively committed to supporting the children academically, socially, and  behaviorally. About 40 parents and children attended the event at Children & Families First in Georgetown.

The celebration was funded through a five-year federal 21st Century Community Center Learning Grant promoting family literacy and parenting skills as well as after-school programmimg.

MES had 43 parents successfully complete the 14-week parenting program in the past five years. SFP uses an evidence-based program with a family literacy component and is the only partnership of its kind in Kent and Sussex counties.

The SFP is an extension of the school's after-school FAME program and has been awarded another five-year grant starting this fall. The SFP will be held again for MES parents in the fall for a seven-week session and spring 2015 for another seven-week session.
