The Delaware KIDS Fund  announces the Fifth Annual Delaware KIDS Fund 5K Run/Walk Saturday, Aug. 2, in Newport.  Runners and walkers will take to the streets of Newport to help benefit the Delaware KIDS Fund.

The race will start and end under the Route 141 overpass, and travel up Route 4 while making its way through scenic Banning Park. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. with the race starting at 8:30. Newport Mayor Michael Spencer will serve as the honorary starter. Festivities will include face painting for the kids, DJ music, moon bounce, on-site massages, race photo booth, an appearance by the Delaware 87ers promo team, United Water Mist Tent cooling station, food and beverages, and appearances by some of Delaware’s most beloved mascots including Rocky Bluewinkle from the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

The Delaware KIDS Fund (Kids In Distressed Situations), established by Thomas J. Hanna of Harvey, Hanna & Associates Inc., is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing goods and services to children at risk and in distressed situations. This year’s event will help fight the ongoing hunger issue in Delaware affecting children under the age of 18. Proceeds from the event will be donated directly to the Food Bank of Delaware in New Castle County and the Cape Henlopen Food Basket in Sussex County on behalf of the Delaware KIDS Fund.

All race participants will receive an event tech T-shirt, microfiber promotional towel, refreshments and food to enjoy before and after the race. A $200 cash prize will be given to the overall male and female winners, plus the top three in 10-year age groups from 13 and under to 70 and over. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers and each first-place finisher will also receive a special prize. Prizes include: Orioles/Red Sox tickets, UD football tickets, Blue Rocks tickets, first pitch at a Blue Rocks game, Hockessin Athletic Club gym membership, Fusion Fitness gym membership, Cavaliers Golf Club round of golf, Rehoboth Beach Running Co. gift certificates, overnight stays at Christiana Hilton and Hyatt Place Dewey Beach, restaurant gift certificates and more, including a silent auction table and raffle prizes.

The annual event has grown from just over 100 runners and walkers in its inaugural year to over 400 in 2013. This year’s goal for the Delaware KIDS Fund is to reach 500 race participants.

Registration fee is $20 before Thursday, July 31, and $25 after and day of event. Register at www.races2run.com or www.dekidsfund.org.
