Tiger shark off Indian River Inlet

August 7, 2014

Septima, a 12-foot, 8-inch, 1,000-pound female tiger shark, is currently located near the coast of the Indian River Inlet, according to ocearch.org, a nonprofit organization that tags and researches great white sharks and other large apex predators.

A ping - a tracking method using sonar - was recorded at 5:33 p.m. Aug. 6 off the coast of Indian River Inlet. On Aug. 1, Septima was in the middle of Isle of Wight Bay in Ocean City, parallel to about 45th Street.

Septima is named in honor of American educator, civil rights activist and South Carolina native Septima Poinsette Clark. Clark established Citizenship Schools, teaching reading to adults throughout the southern United States.
