The Southern Delaware Chorale (formerly Southern Delaware Choral Society) announces Abigail Davis from Sussex Technical High School and Sara Miller from Delmar High School have been awarded Lee Mitchell Scholarships for the 2014-15 school year.
The scholarship provides each student with voice lessons for the school year - a $1,000 value - membership in the choral society for the 2014-15 season, and concert attire. The recipients will also have the opportunity to showcase their talents by performing solos during this season's concerts.
Davis, a senior, has been singing with the Sussex Tech Concert Choir since ninth grade. She also participates in the auditioned women's chorus, Bella Voce, and Chamber Ensemble and has been part of the All-State Choir for the past two years. Davis loves to sing and says she uses her talent as a creative outlet and as a way to make friends. With a distinctive alto voice, Davis will be a great addition to the alto section.
Miller, a senior, is very involved in the music and drama departments of Delmar High School. She is an active member of the Women's and A Cappella choirs. A first soprano, she has been called upon to be the one to hit the high C when needed. Her voice will be an asset to the soprano section of the chorale. Miller plans to go to the University of Delaware majoring in music and performing arts/education. Her dream is to continue her education in New York and to perform on Broadway.
The Lee Mitchell Scholarship program of the Southern Delaware Chorale was made possible by an endowment from the family of the late Lee Mitchell, internationally renowned pianist and composer. The scholarship award was initiated to advance the cause of music and arts among high school students.
All high schools in Sussex County are invited to submit applications for sophomore and junior high school students to audition for the scholarship in the spring. For more information on the Southern Delaware Chorale and the Lee Mitchell Scholarship go to www.southerndelawarechoralsociety.org.
