Wolf Pack runner wins Race for the Paws in alpha male time of 17:44

Jeff Young from Wayne, Pa. dodges dogs on way to finish line
August 11, 2014

The Race for the Paws 5K in downtown dog-friendly Dewey Beach Aug. 9 attracted 310 runners, 50 walkers and canines too numerous to count (who counts dogs?), all there to raise money for the Delaware SPCA.

The Starboard Restaurant and Bar was the registration and post-race party location, adding Race for the Paws to the Running of the Bull to its list of animal-friendly activities.

The Delaware chapter of the Black Girls Run Club chose the paws race for their annual summer run for fun and personal health get-together.

‘The town was jumping by 7:30 with the race and people coming in for the skim competition up on the beach," said Race Director Tim Bamforth. "I’ve never seen so many dogs embedded in a road race.”

Ironically, lead runner Jeff Young, 23, from Wayne, Pa., wore a black-and-white North Carolina Wolf Pack shirt and cruised to victory in 17:44.  Nate Hamilton, 19, from Hummelstown, Pa., was second in 18:04.  Rounding out the top five for males were Kevin Pedersen, 19:06; Bobby Hutton, 19:25; and James Livingston, 19:28.

Jayme Orr, 31, from Altoona, Pa. was the first woman, in 20:14, followed by Heather Morrow, 22:02; Amie Brady, 21:27; Dawn Brady, 21:29; and Allison Gedney, 22:19.

The Brady girls from Katy, Texas won their age groups with daughter Amie, 27, getting gold in the 25-29 age group and mom Dawn, 56, capturing the 55-59 age division.
