RBCC junior golf program is a growing success

August 22, 2014

The ranks of junior golfers in the Cape Region have thinned out a bit in the last few years, but there may be some welcome changes from that worrying pattern.

Rehoboth Beach Country Club held its Junior Club Championship Aug. 12, the final event in the club’s summer junior program. The best news was that the 2014 attendance totals were almost twice those of last year.

“Our Junior Golf Program is designed to introduce the sport of golf to youngsters of all experience levels,” said Charlie Schuyler, head golf professional at RBCC. “Our team of golf professionals worked closely with a truly dedicated group of member volunteers to add some fun new challenges to the program, in addition to teaching etiquette and the sportsmanship of the game of golf.”

Nolan Brown won the 9-hole division with a score of 41, while Ethan Paradee won the 5-hole division with his 24. Harrison Humes won the 3-hole division, after a three-way playoff, with a fine score of 18.

In honor of Ruth Beebe and Jack Gueveur, the club bestows two awards each year to the boy and girl who exemplify integrity, sportsmanship, and the spirit of the game. This year’s awards went to Jackson Paradee and Elle Anderson.

Junior Golf Program participants also earned awards for the longest putt, closest to the hole, and a drive, chip and putt contest. These winners included Ryan Brafman, Julian Paris, Ethan Paradee, Zach Burris, Dylan Medi, Tommy Burn and Liam Boyle.

RBCC holds Ladies’ Member-Guest Tournament

Rehoboth Beach Country Club hosted its annual 18-Hole Ladies’ Member-Guest Tournament Aug. 12 and 13, enjoyed by 80 participants. This annual tournament is the most anticipated event of the season for avid female golfers at the club.

Using the familiar format of two best balls of four, teams competed in two flights.

The overall champions posted a winning total score of 37 under par. The title went to club members Kathy Caroll and Kim Stockson and their guests, Rosemary Quinn of Naples, Fla., and Ellen Kunkel of Bel Air, Md.

“The weather made the event a bit challenging this year,” said RBCC head pro Schuyler. “Rain and wind on the first day cut the rounds short, but they definitely made up for it with a fantastic second day out on the course.”

Assistant golf pro Geoge Bushby scored a surprising hole-in-one for one lucky team during the event. The tournament features a customary “pro-assist” from the club pros. On the 13th hole, playing at 105 yards, Bushby hit an ace with his gap wedge with his first swing of the day.
