Steppin' Up To The Plate

Coffee + New Houses = The Coffee House!

August 21, 2014

Rehoboth Beach locals Jeff and Jen Zerby just can’t sit still when it comes to accommodating visitors to their home town. Whether it’s an antique-filled oceanfront room (complete with a Victorian four-poster) at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel or an upscale breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktail or late-night Boardwalk bite at Victoria’s restaurant, they’ve got things covered down where Olive Avenue meets the Atlantic.

But they still can’t sit still. So in July 2010 they opened The Point Coffee House and Bake Shoppe at the westernmost end of Rehoboth Avenue. Even after The Point opened, Boardwalk Plaza food and beverage director Steve Cobb and onsite baker John DelVecchio spent their nights painting and setting up the kitchen.

After 4 years, barely a day goes by that Steve and John don’t make multiple commutes to deliver sweet delectables, artisanal breads and exotic coffees to the hotel.

Jennifer says that The Point has become “what the hotel coffee shop would be if we had one.” The desserts and in-house roasted coffees on Victoria’s menu are whipped up at The Point. Boardwalk Plaza diners nosh merrily on DelVecchio’s freshly baked bread. And wait ‘til you try the sticky buns and made-to-order waffles. (You can imagine how painful it was to research this article.)

And they still can’t sit still! Just last month, the Zerbys and the brothers Schell (local super builders-of-note) pooled their resources to bring a mini-Point down to the Rehoboth Boardwalk, near Spice & Tea Exchange and The Ice Cream Store.

It's all about cookies, floorplans, coffee, new neighborhoods, croissants and construction at The Coffee House. The place is nicely laid out with attractive displays that draw the eye. People nosh, sip and browse the glowing dioramas and shadowboxes that showcase the custom creations for which the Schell Bros.’ companies are so well known. It's like a perpetual open-house, except with sticky buns. Relax and peruse The Coffee House from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day in season.
