Special events in September require lane closures and delays

The Delaware Department of Transportation has announced that motorists can expect lane closures and potential back-ups for the following planned special events in September. Use caution on and around these area roadways, and follow the instructions of law enforcement and DelDOT personnel on site.

• Bottle & Cork 10 Miler and 5K at Dewey Beach – Saturday, Sept. 6 beginning at 8 a.m. Runners will leave Dewey Beach heading to Rehoboth, Henlopen Acres, the Boardwalk, and returning to Dewey Beach for the 10-mile race. There will be a temporary right lane closure on Route 1 northbound from McKinley Street to Route 1A in Dewey for the race. For further information, contact Wayne@races2run.com.

• 37th Annual Nanticoke Indian PowWow-Saturday, Sept. 6, Sunday, Sept. 7. The event will be take place from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The grounds are located off Route 24/John J. Williams Highway near Mt. Joy Road/Oak Orchard Road. Fire police will assist with traffic control at Mt. Joy Road and Piaffe Lane. For further information, contact www.nanticokeindians.org.

• Tour de Sussex – Saturday, Sept. 13, beginning at 7 a.m. Cyclists will leave Delaware Technical Community College-Owens Campus in Georgetown. Rest stops highlights will include: Dogfish Brewery, Irish Eyes, Papa Grande’s, and Trap Pond. For more information, contact www.dtcc.edu.

• Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon - Saturday, Sept. 13, from 7:30 a.m. until noon. There will be a lane shift north of Fred Hudson Road on Route 1 northbound and southbound. Motorists should expect traffic delays for this event from Dewey Beach to Fred Hudson Road. Trailblazers and message signs will be placed to assist motorists. • Bike MS:Bike to the Bay 2014 - Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21. Cyclists will begin the ride at 8 a.m., Sept. 20, from Delaware Technical Community College, Scarborough Road in Dover to The Towers at Delaware Seashore State Park, Dewey Beach. At 8 a.m., Sept. 21, cyclists will leave Delaware Seashore State Park and return to Scarborough Road in Dover. No lane closures will occur Saturday and Sunday. However, motorists should expect minimum delays with cyclists on Route 1 northbound shoulders in the area of Tower Road Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For further information, contact kate.cowperthwait@msdelaware.org.

• Bethany Beach Triathlon & Duathlon - Sunday, Sept. 21 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Multiple single lane closures will be in place on Route 1 northbound and southbound starting at 6 a.m. between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach. Lane restrictions should be lifted by 11 a.m. In addition, there will be various shoulder closures along Route 1 and the right-turn lane from Route 1 northbound to Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed for the duration of the event. Cyclists will leave Garfield Parkway at Bethany Beach starting at 7:45 until 11 a.m., Sunday, and continue on the shoulders of Route 1 northbound over the Indian River Inlet bridge turning around at New Road near Dewey Beach. Cyclists will continue southbound on Route 1 over the Indian River Inlet bridge returning to Garfield Parkway. At Garfield Parkway, runners will be on the shoulders at South Ocean Drive. DelDOT advises all motorists to allow extra time to reach a destination, slow down, and obey traffic laws. DelDOT and the Delaware State Police will be on site to monitor traffic.

Motorists can adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’s Smartphone application. The DelDOT App is available for Apple and Android smart phones and tablets, and can be downloaded free at the Apple and Google Play stores or go to www.DelDOT.gov and click on the link to stores.

Motorists should check DelDOT online at www.DelDOT.gov and on your web enabled cell phone at www.DelDOT.gov/mobile for updated travel-related information or tune to WTMC 1380 AM.
