Did You Know That October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

A woman’s battle against breast cancer requires many difficult decisions over a short period of time.  Many women facing a mastectomy may not be aware of the benefits of having an experienced plastic surgeon assist the oncologist with her mastectomy and that there are options with which an oncologist may not be familiar with following a mastectomy.

One option is to have breast reconstruction using implants, one’s own tissue or a combination of implant and tissue.  Complete breast reconstruction can be physically & emotionally rewarding for a woman who has lost a breast due to cancer.  The creation of a new breast can dramatically improve self-confidence and quality of life for breast cancer survivors.   Whether you have recently been diagnosed or you had a mastectomy years ago, it is never too late consider breast reconstruction.

Breast reconstruction is not for every woman.  An alternative to breast reconstruction is a complete mastectomy without the creation of a new breast.  This is a wonderful option for women who find it easier to live an active lifestyle without breasts or for those who simply want to get the cancer out and move on with their lives.  Women who choose this option should not and do not see themselves as disfigured or damaged.  They see their scars as a beautiful reminder of how precious life is and can be extremely satisfied with their decision and results.

Breast reconstruction or a complete mastectomy are good options for you if:

  • You are able to cope well with your diagnosis & treatment.
  • You do not have any additional medical conditions that may impair healing.
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for restoring your breast and body image.
