Virgie 'Susie' Rivera, Friendship UMC member

Virgie Mae “Susie” Rivera, 86, of Millsboro, passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington Aug. 21, 2014.

Born in Oak Orchard Nov. 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Eli Hitchens and Virgie Mae Thompson. She was a faithful member of both Friendship UMC and the Nanticoke Indian Association. She was preceded by her late husband of 25 years, William Rivera; a sister: Sarah “Stump” Johnson, and her brothers: Harvey “Layton” Hitchens, and Reginald Hitchens, and a sister: Thelma Miller.

Survivors include Edwin “Jimmy” Hitchens, Peggy Miller-Lares, Evelyn “Bell” Harmon, Dennis Thompson, Gordon Bacon, Jocelyn “Dee” Cannon, Myra Wright-Conaway, Mark Hitchens, Donna Hitchens-Wright, Lyndon “Lenny” Hitchens and Carmen Rivera-Jara. Grandchildren include: Terry Alston, Ricky Alston, Danielle Hitchens, Dennis Hitchens, Gwen Miller, Veronica Miller, Tammy Martinez, Dennis Thompson Jr., Elia Dennis, Deon Bacon, Gordon Bacon Jr., Chrissy Knull, Janine Bacon, Edward Cannon, Shelby Gibbs, Heather Winder, Jeremiah Cannon, Jordan Cannon, Evelyn Handy, Jan Harmon Jr., Sylvia Harmon, Maria Harmon, Nicole Dukes, Jackie Harmon, Walter Wright, Ashley Wright, Joshua Hitchens, Jonathan Hitchens, Joshua Hitchens, Ronney C. Wright, Courtney Wright and Cristopher Rivera; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 30, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., also at Watson Funeral Home, Sunday, Aug. 31, with the Rev. Annie Jane Custis officiating. Friends may call from 11 till 1 p.m. for visitation on Sunday.
