Bestselling author Pam Jenoff to appear at Browseabout Sept. 7
Pam Jenoff will be appearing at Browseabout Books, 133 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach, to present her latest release, "The Winter Guest," at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 7.
Jenoff holds a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from George Washington University and a master’s degree in history from Cambridge, and she received her juris doctor from the University of Pennsylvania.
In "The Winter Guest," the author transports readers back to 1940s Poland and the early years of the Nazi invasion. Combining a dangerous and desperate romance with intense family drama, her newest novel paints a harrowing depiction of life during World War II as two sisters explore love, sacrifice, and the choices that threaten to tear them apart.
In their rural Polish village, twin sisters Helena and Ruth Nowak are fighting to keep their family safe and fed as resources grow scarce and the Nazi invaders infiltrate their lives. After their mother falls ill and is hospitalized in Krakow, Helena and Ruth are forced to care for their younger siblings.
Helena visits her mother frequently at the hospital, providing updates on her health to Ruth. Returning from a visit one day, Helena discovers a fallen Allied paratrooper stranded outside their village. Sam Rosen has a broken leg - and is a Jew - and Helena risks her safety to hide him. She tries to keep him a secret but ultimately must inform her sister. When it’s clear Helena’s concern for Sam has grown into something more, Ruth becomes alarmed and jealous.
As the Nazis close in on the village, Helena discovers a potentially fatal family secret buried long ago by her mother and knows she must act quickly to ferry her family out of the country. But her biggest hurdle might be convincing her family to trust her and put their lives in the hands of their winter guest.
Jenoff’s meticulous research and deep understanding of the period adds urgency to the story of two sisters who are fighting for survival as they yearn for happiness.
