Louise Hanby, esteemed educator

September 3, 2014

Louise Hanby, 92, of Ocala, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at her home after a short and courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Molloy and Estelle Rogers Vaughn of Dixie-Del Farms, Lewes, and was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Arthur S. (Bud) Hanby; and brothers Molloy C. Jr. and Stephen Vaughn Sr.

After graduating from Lewes High School in 1939 and Madison College in1943 (now James Madison University), where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and a member of the Bluestone Society of JMU, she taught home economics in Laurel and Georgetown. She returned to teaching when her youngest child entered first grade. She then taught elementary school and completed a 28-year career in education. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teaching sorority.

Her life journey kept her active in many organizations: educational, civic, fraternal and church-related. She was a former member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes, a past guardian of Bethel No. 5, Job’s Daughters, a past matron of Unity Chapter No. 16, Eastern Star, a member of the Magna Carta Dames and Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Gideons International Auxiliary.

None of these activities was more satisfying than serving her Lord and Savior at Maranatha Baptist Church in Ocala, where she was active on the Missions Committee, sang in the choir, was an encourager of others and a prayer warrior, and shared God’s love and peace with whomever she could. She also greatly enjoyed participating in Bible Study Fellowship in Ocala.

Her greatest pleasure was her family and their many activities over the years, including camping vacations, sailing, water skiing, golfing (charter member of Sussex Pines 9-Holers), duck hunting, and traveling in the U.S. and Europe.

Her life journey was filled with gratefulness to God for her faith, family, friends, and future (a home in heaven) - all gifts from God.

She is survived by her three children: Art (Josephine) Hanby, Barbara (Bill) Meade, and Mary (Al) Ginter; six grandchildren: Eileen Ham and Robin Winningham, Will and Tim Meade, and Jessica and David Ginter; one stepgrandson: Gregory Giananti; four great-grandchildren; her brother Bill (Judy) Vaughn; sisters-in-law Dorothy Sturges and Jean Vaughn; her Swiss daughter, Susi Hausler of Basel, Switzerland; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Bruce Chapel East in Ocala. A Celebration Service will be Friday, Sept. 5, at 3 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church in Marion Oaks. Burial will be private at Bushnell National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider providing Memorial Bibles through the Gideons International or making a donation to the Maranatha Baptist Church Building Fund.
