Poet Sue Ellen Thompson to read at Browseabout Books May 17

May 14, 2015

Browseabout Books announces a poetry reading with Sue Ellen Thompson featuring selections from her latest collection, "They." The reading will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 17. Afterward, at 3:30 p.m., the Browseabout Book Club will meet to discuss the poems in more detail. Members of the public are invited to stay for the discussion.

The poems in "They" tell the story of a mother, her aging father, and her transgender child. As the mother struggles to understand her adult child’s emerging identity, the daughter takes it upon herself to remain close to her grandfather, a World War II veteran and former POW, as he faces his final years alone. These poems explore the challenges gender identity poses to three different generations.

Thompson’s poems have been read on National Public Radio by Garrison Keillor, have been featured in U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser’s nationally syndicated newspaper column, and have received numerous awards. She has taught poetry at Middlebury College, Wesleyan University, Binghamton University, Central Connecticut State University and the University of Delaware. For more information, call 302-226-2665.
