Great white shark swims through the Delaware Bay

May 18, 2015

A mature, 16-foot great white shark swung through the Delaware Bay May 15 before heading back out into the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean and down the East Coast.

OCEARCH, a nonprofit organization researching great whites and other large predators, tagged the 3,456-pound great white shark – named Mary Lee – in September 2012. Since she was tagged, Mary Lee has traveled more than 20,000 miles, according to OCEARCH's website.

Mary Lee surfaced on the Delaware side of the Delaware Bay – almost in the middle of the bay – just south of Bowers Beach shortly after 10 a.m., May 15. Since then, she has pinged, which is the term used when a shark surfaces and OCEARCH can specifically pinpoint its location, outside of Ocean City, N.J., near Ocean City, Md., and was last recorded around 10 a.m., Monday, May 18, in the Atlantic off the coast of Chicoteague Island.
