The 2020 Christmas Season Kicks Off This Weekend with Several Great Local Events at and Near the Beaches

November 25, 2020

This weekend marks the beginning of the Christmas and holiday shopping seasons in the coastal region and throughout North America and the world. So it only makes since that our latest “Weekender Blog” is about all things Christmas for this final weekend of November.

Due to COVID restrictions, many annual events that are normally held this weekend have been forced to cancel, the most notable being the popular tree lighting and sing along in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

But many outdoor events continue, with social distancing and mask usage guidelines in place in accordance with current state protocols. So if you want to go outside this weekend and soak up the holiday spirit, there are plenty of ways to safely do that.

With one exception in Ocean City, all of this weekend’s featured events are being held outdoors. And in some cases, this is being done at extra expense to the organizers, in trying to create as festive of a mood as possible in what are obviously very difficult times for everyone.

So support whoever you can in whatever way you can this holiday season. We begin our look at this weekend’s featured events with a couple of area tree lighting ceremonies, then continue scrolling for more of what’s happening between November 27-29 in Delaware and Maryland’s coastal regions.

Area Tree Lightings (November 28). Due in part to the large crowds that normally descend on downtown Rehoboth Beach for the city’s annual tree lighting and sing along, this year’s event planned for Friday has been cancelled due to COVID related health concerns. Bethany Beach’s tree lighting has also been cancelled for 2020.

But if you enjoy this kind of event, there are still a couple of area tree lightings planned for Saturday, November 28, in Dewey Beach and Ocean View.

The Dewey Beach event will begin at 5 p.m., at Fifer’s Orchard on Route 1, with plenty of free parking available for the evening. The Ocean View lighting will be part of that town’s “Old Town Holiday Market,” scheduled for 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Social distancing guidelines must be practiced at both events.

While there is no big tree lighting ceremony in downtown Rehoboth Beach for 2020, the bandstand area still includes a holiday tree, so stop by and have a look while doing your holiday shopping in the downtown area.

Rehoboth Beach Holiday Farmer’s Market (November 28). The organizers of the Rehoboth Beach Farmer’s Market will be hosting a special holiday version of the popular market on Saturday, November 28, from 12 to 3 p.m., in Grove Park.

Several vendors will be on hand, with a wide selection of products and items available for your holiday shopping needs.

Examples include pottery, gift baskets, cakes, pies, handcrafted soap, wreaths, fall vegetables, speciality coffees, pet gifts and much more.

Dewey Sip & Shop (November 27). This year’s Dewey Beach Sip & Shop is going on as scheduled, but it’s been moved to a new location and will be held under a 130-foot outdoor tent so that everyone can enjoy a safe experience in adherence to current state health protocols.

Instead of being held as usual at the Starboard, the 2020 event will instead be held in the parking lot of the former Forgotten Mile Ale House to allow for more space and social distancing.

This popular annual event kicks off the holiday shopping season each year in the coastal region and includes many of Dewey Beach’s most popular vendors and shops.

The 2020 Dewey Sip & Shop is scheduled for Friday, November 27, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
