Outdoor Events Highlight This Weekend's Coastal Delaware Calendar
Greetings everyone and welcome to the latest edition of our “Weekender Blog,”brought to you every Wednesday by the professional staff and agents at the Oldfather Group of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty.
Tax time has come and gone and that means all eyes have now turned toward the 2017 warm weather season here at the Delaware beaches.
Memorial Day is only five short weeks away, and the coastal areas are really coming to life in advance of the busiest time of the year in southern Delaware.
As a sure sign of that time of year, nearly all of this weekend’s events are planned for outdoors under the sun, including spring staples like running events, farmer’s markets and even some baseball and other sporting events thrown into the mix.
So, if you like being in the great outdoors, then this weekend in coastal Delaware is going to right up your alley.
Read all about six of this weekend’s best events below, and be sure to check back with us again next week on theoldfathergroup.com for more great happenings here at the Delaware beaches.
Now to tell you a little more about each of our featured events. We begin this week with…
The Coastal Delaware Running Festival (April 21-23). This third annual event has really picked up steam since it’s inception in 2015 and now includes what Trip Advisor calls the “Best Marathon in Delaware."
Festivities begin on Friday, April 21, with a welcome party at the Lighthouse Cove in Dewey Beach. Saturday is dominated by a 5K and, later, a sports exposition.
And Sunday is the main event of the weekend, with a 9K race, a half marathon and the featured full marathon, which will start at Tower Road at Delaware Seashore State Park and later end in Dewey Beach. A post-race party is also planned for Lighthouse Cove, featuring free food, beer and entertainment.
Even if you’re not participating in the event, consider finding a spot along the race route to cheer on the runners and maybe hand out a cup or two of much-needed water to the more than 2,500 expected participants.

Milton Farmer’s Market Opening (April 21). Nothing says spring like the opening of our local farmer’s markets, and Milton’s version opens for the season this Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.
Held on the grounds of Dogfish Head Brewery on Chestnut Street, the market will run every Friday through October.
Different items will be featured each week, but early season favorites generally include asparagus, strawberries, certain types of herbs and even some potatoes.

Lewes Vintage Base Ball Club Home Opener (April 22). The defending Delaware State Champion Lewes Base Ball Club begins its 2017 title defense this weekend with a home game against the United Base Ball Club of Trenton, N.J.
Now, the reason this makes our list is because of the nature of the team, and of the game. Trust us when we say that this is not your ordinary baseball game – far, far from it!
The Lewes Base Ball Club plays by rules that were established in 1864, which is nothing like what baseball is today. Yes, there are still four bases and you still play with a small white ball, but that’s really about it.
Some examples of differences with the modern game include no gloves being worn, balls caught on one hop are considered outs and pitching is done underhand like in softball.
Trust us, this is a great day’s entertainment and something you won’t soon forget. So consider heading out to the baseball diamond at the Villages of Five Points this Saturday at 1 p.m. and cheering on the boys.
