Plenty of Outdoor Activities on the Coastal Events Calendar for this Second Weekend of August 2020

August 5, 2020

With a month or so to go now until Labor Day Weekend and the traditional end of the summer season at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, we hope everyone is enjoying as much “fun in the sun” time as you can.

We realize this summer hasn’t exactly been the norm, but the weather is still nice (Tropical Storm Isaias not withstanding), the beaches are still sandy and there’s still plenty to do along the coast.

While we had a bevy of fun events to tell you about in last week’s blog, this week’s events calendar unfortunately has a number of great annual happenings that have again been cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis that’s gripping the nation and the world.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t still a number of fun, family friendly things to do at the Delaware and Maryland beaches. And we’re here to tell you about as many of them as we can.

So let’s get started with the winding down of a big annual event in Ocean City, then we’ll segue into some fun activities in Delaware’s coastal region.

Take a look…

Conclusion of White Marlin Open (August 6-7). The race is on during the final two days of the 2020 White Marlin Open in Ocean City, as boat captains compete to see who can bring in the largest fish before the clock runs out.

NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan is even on hand again for this year’s event, the second year in a row MJ has made the trip to Ocean City for the world’s largest billfish tournament.

The five day tournament wraps up on Friday, August 7, with the final weigh-ins, which will happen at Harbour Island.

Spectators are still invited to watch the live stream at the nearby 3rd Street Bayside ballpark, where social distancing, mask usage and health protocols remain in place.

Meterless Mondays (August). If you’ve been wanting to support downtown Rehoboth Beach businesses but have been hesitant to do so because of parking fees during the summer, well it’s now a perfect time to show your support as the resort is featuring “Meterless Mondays” for the month of August.

The measure was unanimously approved by Rehoboth Beach commissioners and will run through Monday, August 31. Free parking begins every Monday at 4 p.m.

The move was created due to an appeal by Rehoboth Beach Main Street, which informed the commission regarding how much downtown businesses are suffering in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you follow our blog, you know we’ve been stressing the importance of supporting local businesses as much as we can during this difficult time. Doing so will allow as many as possible to return for the Summer of 2021.

Outdoor Concert at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal (August 6). “Pressing Strings” from Annapolis (see music video below) will be rocking the outdoor areas around the Lewes Ferry Terminal this Thursday, August 6, from 5 to 7 p.m., in a summer concert that benefits the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park.

This is the third of four summer concerts planned for the ferry terminal, where you can rent your own private 12-foot square on the lawn for you and your family to enjoy this two-hour outdoor concert.

Food and beverages are also available from Grain on the Rocks at the Lewes Ferry Terminal, which can be delivered to you on the lawn while you enjoy the festivities.

In accordance with health guidelines, masks will be required except for the time that you’re in your square. Lawn chairs and towels are permitted during the show.
