Sandcastle Contest, Craft Shows, Surfing Championships Take Center Stage This Weekend at the Beaches

July 10, 2019

We sincerely hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of July holiday here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches. But the party doesn’t stop all summer long, and we have more great events coming up over the next few days to tell you about.

Read below for much more about this weekend’s biggest events, but here’s a little bit of a spoiler – you may want to visit the always fabulous Delaware Seashore State Park, where one of the most enjoyable family events of the season is taking place this Saturday.

Other events we’ll be telling you about in our latest “Weekender Blog,” are being held in historic Lewes, at the local treasure that is the Freeman Stage near Fenwick Island and in Maryland’s favorite summertime resort of Ocean City.

Okay, so let’s jump right into it shall we? Here are the Oldfather Group’s top choices for fun and family friendly events coming up during the July 12-14 extended weekend at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

Sandcastle Contest at Delaware Seashore State Park (July 13). One of the most popular annual events at Delaware Seashore State Park, the sandcastle contest is being held for the 39th time this Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The state park and the popular Big Chill Beach Club are co-sponsoring the event for 2019, which should make for a fun and memorable day on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Registration for the contest begins at 9 a.m. and judging begins at 12:30 p.m, with prizes awarded afterwards. And Big Chill will be open all day, so taking a break and grabbing something to eat or drink should be relatively easy.

This event is free and all members of the public are invited to join the competition. Call 302-227-6991 for more information on this year’s Delaware Seashore State Park Sandcastle Contest.

Lewes Summer Craft Fair (July 13). The always well-attended Lewes Summer Craft Fair will be held this Saturday, July 13, at the Lewes Historical Society Complex on Shipcarpenter Street downtown.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., fine artisans from throughout Delmarva are expected for this year’s event, which will also feature live music, food options and more.

Call 302-645-7670 or visit www.historiclewes.org for more information.

Lewes Antiques Show and Sale (July 12-13). Also in Lewes this weekend is the 2019 Antiques Show and Sale, held each year at Bethel United Methodist Church on West 4th Street.

This year’s show will feature two dozen dealers, each displaying their collections of quality antiques and collectibles.

Lunch will also be served each day, with hours running from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. Admission is $5 each day.
