13 Cape athletes sign to play college sports

Thirteen Cape athletes signed agreements to play a college sport during ceremonies held May 26. The event was staged inside the field house tunnel and there were doughnuts. How cool is that?
Signees were Blake Gipko and Nic Arnold, Wingate University, lacrosse; Gabe Best, Salisbury University, lacrosse; Landon Best, York College, lacrosse; Jaden Davis and Ja’ Vaughn Burton, Salisbury University, football; Haley Craig, Lynn University, lacrosse; Riley Klopp, Franklin & Marshall, field hockey; Marissa Frederick, St. Francis University, softball; Madalyn Swontek, Goucher College, soccer; Jocsan Roman, Neumann University, soccer; Tyler Husbands, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, baseball; and Jacob Alt, University of Central Lancashire, England, soccer.
Gabe Best signed with Salisbury University for lacrosse. He is shown with parents Nicole and Fred Best, and siblings Cassidy, Landon and Regan. The Seagulls are a Division III powerhouse in men’s lacrosse. Coach Jim Berkman has been at the helm for 33 seasons and has won 12 national championships.
Haley Craig signed to play lacrosse at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. She is shown with Jim Craig, Jimmy Craig and Lisa Craig. The Fighting Knights are a Division II institution playing in the Sunshine State Conference.
Jacob Alt, shown with parents Dawn Porto and Raymond Alt, will attend University of Central Lancashire in England and play soccer. The school has 17,000 undergraduates.

Jocsan Roman signed to play soccer at Neumann University in Aston, Pa., a member of the Atlantic East Conference. He is shown with Marlene Vega, Eduardo Gutierrez, Junitza Estrada, Jaydy Gutierrez Vega and Jaleiny Gutierrez Vega.
Jaden Davis signed with Salisbury University for football. He is shown with Troy Maull, Crystal Maull and Mya Maull. Coach Sherman Wood has been at the helm at Salisbury for the last 22 seasons and is the program’s all-time winningest coach. Salisbury is a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Ja’Vaughn Burton signed with Salisbury University for football. Shown in back are Jaden Davis and coach Zach Horstmyor. In front are Haywood Burton, Ja’Vaughn and J.D. Maull. Coach Sherman Wood has been at the helm at Salisbury for the last 22 seasons and is the program’s all-time winningest coach. Salisbury is a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Landon Best signed with York College for lacrosse. He is shown with parents Nicole and Fred Best, and siblings Cassidy, Gabe and Regan Best. The Spartans are a Division III program and play in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth.
Madalyn Swontek signed with Goucher College to play soccer. She is shown with Karen and Lindsay Swontek. The Goucher College Gophers are coached by Stephanie Ricketts. Goucher is a Division III school and a member of the Landmark Conference.
Marissa Frederick signed with St. Francis University in Loretto, Ky., to play softball. She is shown with Rich Frederick and coach Shannon Timmons. St. Francis competes in the Northeast Conference. All 22 of the school’s sports compete at the Division I level. Their nickname is the Red Flash.
Nic Arnold signed with Wingate University for lacrosse. He is shown with parents Dave Arnold and Merle Leonard .Wingate is a Division II program that plays in the Southern Athletic Conference.
Riley Klopp signed with Franklin & Marshall for field hockey. She is shown with Lynette, Darby and Jeff Klopp. F&M competes in the Centennial Conference.
