Tykee Joyner and Stefanie Willey said they have a simple goal at 302 Fit ‘N’ Functional – to provide life-changing body improvements through boxing and exercise routines designed for all ages and skill levels.
“Our concept is functionality for life,” said Joyner, owner of the new gym. “It’s a lifestyle.”
Joyner said 302 Fit ‘N’ Functional, located in Camelot Shopping Center off Route 1, is a boxing gym that also provides exercise routines for anyone with any type of skill level and background.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to help people, and fitness is a way to do that,” said Joyner, who uses a combination of old-school, sweat-it-out boxing and weightlifting along with new-school functionality training. “It’s about providing clients with a level of fitness that allows them to carry on with their day-to-day activities while also getting in better shape.”
Willey, gym manager, said 302 Fit ‘N’ Functional offers a variety of different membership packages for customers – from those weekend warriors who want to get a good workout while they’re visiting to VIP personal training, with everything in between. These workouts target all ages and can increase functionality, she said, adding corporate packages are also available.
“We’re trying to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle and improve a client’s quality of life,” said Willey, who met Joyner when they were trainers at another area gym.
Willey said their trainers, roughly a dozen, all have a different specialty, which means they can meet most clients’ needs and wants.
Sitting on one of the benches, Willey pulls out a three-ring binder with two dozen different types of workouts – low-impact for beginners, high-intensity for experts, defensive training, women-focused, and more.
The bread and butter at 302 Fit ‘N’ Functional is its boxing classes. Joyner said he comes from a family of boxers and has been boxing since before he was a teenager. Everything in life has a natural rhythm to it, and boxing helps people find it, he said.
The gym features no fewer than six different types of punching bags for customers and room for a makeshift boxing ring with a trainer in body vest and hand mitts.
Punching one of the bags filled with water, Joyner said that one allows a client to functionally punch a bag, but it absorbs a lot of the shock, so it’s much softer on the joints. However, he said, not all the bags are soft.
“It depends on the client, but we can go as hard as someone wants to go,” he said with a smile, adding that next to swimming, boxing is among the best workouts a person can do in terms of burning calories.
Joyner said providing classes for school-age kids is about being a part of the community. It’s not just about fitness, he said.
