Adopt-A-Family Holiday Program seeks sponsors by Dec. 8

October 10, 2017

The Delaware Division of Health and Human Services Division of State Service Centers is seeking sponsors for this year's Adopt-A-Family Holiday Program to serve needy families. Sponsors provide gift cards in the minimum amount of $100 per child for the family or families they choose to adopt. Those who choose to adopt an individual adult who is disabled or living in a nursing home may donate items the person has requested on a wish list.

There are several ways to help. Sponsors may call 302-424-7260 to receive family circumstances for families with children to provide gift cards. To adopt children online from Wednesday, Nov. 1, to Friday, Dec. 8, go to www.holidays.daymaker.com/o/aafde. Checks or gift cards may be delivered to the Adopt-a-Family office at 13 SW Front St., Suite 113, Milford, and this will allow organizers to choose a family with children to receive the gifts. Sponsors also may call 302-424-7260 to receive family circumstances of seniors and/or individuals with disabilities and shop for items on their wish lists.

Because of the past generosity of Delawareans, Adopt-A-Family has been able to assist unemployed or underemployed parents, grandparents and relatives raising grandchildren; homeless families living in shelters or hotels; children in group homes; women and children in households that have suffered domestic violence, financial or other crises; seniors on fixed incomes living at home receiving home healthcare; individuals with disabilities and terminal illnesses; and residents of nursing homes or state institutions who have few or no family members to share gifts at holiday time.

Last year the program served over 1,900 families, and organizers hope to surpass that number with continued generosity and support. To make online donations, go to www.holidays.daymaker.com/o/aafde. The deadline for nursing home gift delivery is Friday, Dec. 8. The deadline for gift card delivery to families is Friday, Dec. 15.
