American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 collects school supplies for Cape

October 15, 2020

Although the school year looks very different this year, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 still supported local students by working with the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation and its Caravan of Caring.

Historically, each end of summer brings a school supply drive when various school supplies are collected and personally distributed to area schools by a group of auxiliary volunteers.

This year, to promote safety, children and youth committee members Debbie Simms and Midge DiNatale partnered with CHEF, which delivered supplies to all nine Cape schools. Full bins were placed in each school office for individual teachers to choose needed items, and home bags were assembled for students’ virtual learning at home.

The auxiliary plans to hold several more school supply drives throughout the school year. Post members, as well as the public, are encouraged to drop off donated school supplies  at the post from 12 to 7 p.m., Thursday to Sunday. American Legion Post 17 is at 113 American Legion Road, Lewes.
