American Legion Post 17 Memorial Day Parade set May 28 in Lewes

May 19, 2018

American Legion Post 17 will host a Memorial Day Parade starting at 11 a.m., Monday, May 28, at Lewes Presbyterian Church, 113 Kings Highway, and continuing down Savannah across the drawbridge to Lewes Beach. The parade will end at Post 17, 113 American Legion Road.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May, and traditions include flying the American flag at half staff until noon, then raising it to full staff. In the morning, the flag should be quickly hoisted to the top of the pole, then solemnly lowered to half staff to remember those who sacrificed their lives in war to ensure the freedom of others. At noon, the flag is raised to full staff as the living resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, and to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

By direction of President Clinton, the National Moment of Remembrance was created. Americans are asked to pause for a minute of silence or playing of “Taps” at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.

The red poppies sold by the American Legion Auxiliary at various locations throughout May are made by disabled veterans, and 100 percent of the donations collected are used to help with its Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation programs. Items needed for veterans in shelters, nursing homes, and the homeless are purchased and distributed through events and visits by Auxiliary members, and packages are sent to active-duty troops. May 25 is National Poppy Day, and all are encouraged to wear a poppy to honor the fallen and support the living heroes who have worn this nation’s uniform.
