American women dominate U.S. Open

September 8, 2017

A surprising amount of American women are succeeding in this year's US Open.

For the first time since 1981, the Women's semifinalists in the US Open are all Americans. The competitors are Madison Keys, Coco Vandeweghe, Venus Williams and Sloane Stevens.

Serena Williams is not playing in the tournament because she just had her first child. Her older sister, Venus, is definitely holding back Father Time. It is very impressive that Venus has made it this far at the age of 37.

As for the other three, I am hoping this is not just a one time thing. They are all young enough that it would be great to see this happen multiple times in the years ahead. It will definitely be a great storyline to follow into next year.

On the men's side, everyone was looking forward to a possible Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal showdown in the semifinals, but this will not happen. Federer was beaten Wednesday night by Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals. The winner of this match was pretty obvious by the end of the first set. I bet Federer has at least one more year of great tennis before he considers retirement.

In the Eagles' first game this Sunday, they will play the Washington Redskins in Washington. This game will be a good measuring stick to see how successful the Eagles' season will be. They need to play a whole lot better than they did against the New York Jets in that last preseason game!

What a miserable performance that was to use as a measure to start the NFL season. I think the Eagles have a 50-50 chance of making the playoffs but only if they have a 9 or 10 win season.

The U.S. men's soccer team does not deserve much mention this week. It seemed like they were sleepwalking through their two games this past weekend, losing 2-0 to Costa Rica at home and tying Honduras on the road.

They barely redeemed themselves in that tied effort, getting that point in the last five minutes of regulation time. The next game in October against Trinidad and Tobago is a very important game for them to win or they could be eliminated from even having a World Cup spot come June 2018.
