Angler’s Motel welcomes guests in 1975

January 6, 2026

The Angler’s Motel once stood along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in Lewes. Built in the 1950s, it had 26 rooms on a piece of property that is now home to Hotel Blue on Anglers Road across from the Wheelhouse restaurant.

Prior to Hotel Blue’s approval, developers Scott de Kuyper and John Lester attempted to build a 21-unit townhouse project called Safe Harbor on the site. De Kuyper had purchased the Angler’s Motel from Bill Beauchamp in 1994. The project fell through when the Lewes Board of Adjustment denied a variance to build the project.

De Kuyper came back to Lewes with a new plan that fit within the commercial zoning regulations. It was approved in January 2003, and the Angler’s Motel was razed just a few months later to make way for construction.
