Anthony Judson Bennett, retired river boat pilot
Anthony Judson Bennett, affectionately known by all as “Jud,” passed away Saturday, May 2, 2026. A true son of the Delaware coast, Jud lived a life defined by his love for the water, his dedication to public service and his deep commitment to his family.
Born Jan. 15, 1944, and raised on Lewes Beach, Jud spent his youth immersed in the rhythms of the coast – swimming, fishing, boating and crabbing. This early passion for the sea led him to a distinguished 33-year career as a Delaware River Pilot. Even off the clock, Jud was a quintessential waterman, happiest when he was on his boat or fishing in the Delaware Bay. In addition to his time on the water, Jud loved riding his bike through the scenic trails of Cape Henlopen State Park.
Jud was a proud alumnus of St. Andrew’s School in Middletown and University of Delaware, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. His loyalty to his alma mater never wavered, and he could often be found cheering on the Delaware Blue Hens football team.
A man of strong convictions and a desire to give back, Jud served on Lewes City Council for six years. He was a frequent voice in local politics, running for the Sussex County Council in 2004 and 2008. The 2004 election remained a point of pride and local legend, as he lost by just three votes – the closest election in Delaware history. In his later years, he continued to engage with his community by writing weekly articles for his conservative network.
Jud is survived by his son, Walter J. Bennett and his daughter-in-law Catharine Bennett of Richmond, Va. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Johnathan Bennett, Sophia Bennett and Jason Bennett of Mechanicsville, Va., and his great-granddaughter, Joelle Bennett.
A private burial will be held at St. George’s Chapel in Harbeson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jud’s memory to Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park. He was a pillar of his family and his community, and his presence on the Delaware Bay will be deeply missed.
