Painting, sketches depict World War II
July 18, 2018

The Fort Miles Historical Association hosted artists and guests July 1 for a museum tour and artwork unveiling.

Lewes aviation artist Paul Rendel donated his new oil painting, “Fort Miles Flyover” to the museum. The painting depicts the B-25 twin-engine bomber plane “Panchito” as it would have appeared flying over Fort Miles during World War II. Owned by Larry Kelley, the World War II-era Panchito is housed at Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown., and flew the last combat mission on Aug. 12, 1945, against Kanoya Airfield, Kyushu.

The event also celebrated artists whose works were selected for display after participating in a sketching contest during April’s Delaware Goes to War event at Cape Henlopen State Park. Artists paid a fee of $25 to sketch reenactors, equipment and vehicles recreating World War II scenes, and each could enter up to five sketches. Rendel judged submissions, and chose sketches by amateur artists Rick Cross, Scott Roberts and Stephen Burke for display.
