Athletes of the Week Aug. 15

August 15, 2025
Cooper Forcucci

An Academic Challenge and AP student at Cape, this rising junior recently won the junior men's and semi-pro divisions at the World Championship of Skimboarding in Dewey Beach. After the event, he made the decision to turn pro. "Coop is the future of the pros," said fellow pro Sydney Pizza. "He brings a class and effortlessness to his skimming that you don't see every day." Cooper is a team rider for Alley-Oop Skim, as well as a camp counselor for its summer camp. He is a member of the honor society at Cape and plays on the golf team, as well as being a partner on the Vikings’ unified basketball team. Cooper has also served as a student leader on the Delaware Department of Education Film Impact Team. In his spare time, he can be found fishing or spending time with family and friends.

Elizabeth Fry

Elizabeth helped lead the Sussex County Lifesaving Association to its second straight national championship last week in California. She scored 61.625 individual points, the most of any woman at the event. She finished fourth in the run-swim-run, fifth in the board rescue race, sixth in the surf race, eighth in the ironwoman and 12th in the board race. She was also part of the team that finished fifth in the Taplin relay. Elizabeth grew up in the Baltimore area but now lives in Delaware. She is in her fourth year at Delaware State Parks Beach Patrol. She graduated in 2023 from Notre Dame. She was a member of the swim team in both high school and college. She trains year-round for the competition, swimming and running daily. Her favorite event is the ironman because it demonstrates an all-around athlete.

Tyrone Handy

A rising senior on the Cape football squad, this returning all-conference and all-state free safety is making quite the impression on the Vikings’ new head coach. "I think Ty is going to have a great season," said Cape coach Chip Knapp. "He has already shown his ability to learn new things on the field. He's aggressive and is a very competitive player that is the leader of our pass defense, but he’s also very willing to come up and make tackles in the run game." He is known to his teammates and coaches as a hard-working teammate who has a very business-like approach to his job on the field. Ty is also a great student in the classroom, maintaining a 3.7 GPA. He plans on becoming a commercial airline pilot after graduation. In his spare time, he likes to go fishing, play video games and hang out with his friends.

Coleman Woodard

Coleman helped lead the Sussex County Lifesaving Association to its second straight national championship last week in California. He scored the most individual points for the Sussex men with 45.250. “The surf was huge and nothing like we have competed in locally this summer, but we knew what we had to do and we delivered the goods,” said Coleman. He finished third in the ironman, and teamed with Josh McIntire to finish sixth in the board rescue race. He was also part of the teams that finished fourth in the Taplin relay and sixth in the board relay. A Millsboro native, Coleman graduated from Sussex Tech, where he was a member of the swim team. He currently attends Delaware Technical Community College, studying communications. This is his fourth season with Delaware State Parks Beach Patrol.
