Athletes of the Week Dec. 10

December 10, 2021
Dalton Deevey

The 220-pound Southern Slam Invitational champion last weekend in South Carolina was Dalton Deevey of Cape Henlopen, who beat Caleb Melton of James F. Brynes High School in the finals 10-6. Dalton, who was state runner-up last season at 182, has jumped 28 pounds and three weight classes. “He just looked great all weekend,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “He still has the skills and quickness of a lighter wrestler. Dalton has moved up to the 220-pound weight class where he started the 2021-22 season. Dalton’s gold medal finish at the Southern Slam was impressive.” He was 4-0 at the challenging tournament. “He looked impressive in the finals match on Saturday night,” Mattioni said. “He hit a nice single leg and immediately finished his shot. It’s the best match I have seen Dalton wrestle. He was aggressive and dominated his opponent. Dalton should have a great year.”

Josh Reinhold

Senior Josh Reinhold is the 3.9 GPA, cross-trained athlete, a sprint swimmer in the pool, and middle infielder and pitcher on the baseball team. Josh swam a personal-best time of 23:28 in the 50 meters Monday versus Brandywine at the Sussex Academy pool. Cape boys lost the meet 95-75. Josh also anchored the winning 200 medley relay team with Dylan Steinwedel, Joshua Turek and Brian Fleming, and swam leadoff in the victorious 200 free relay with Marcus Gromolfsky, Kevin Lewandowski and Holden Tighe. Josh’s 50-meter time would have been in the top 20 in the state last season. “I’m going to Christopher Newport next year, and I want to make the baseball team as a middle infielder,” he said. Josh’s mom, Sarah Grant Reinhold, was an All-Middle Atlantic Conference softball pitcher at Gettysburg, graduating in 1996.

Jack Wiggins

Cape wrestling was leading Lake Forest 55-0 Dec. 1 with four bouts remaining. Senior Jack Wiggins stepped inside the circle and into a magic moment for his high school memory bank. High school wrestling fans know little, yet they know a lot. Jack caught and stuck Ayden Young, pinning the Spartan at 1:40 of the first period. The home crowd went bonkersville. And that is to equate the expectation that Jack may do a slow slog to a decision, but not a throwdown for a quick pin. Coach Chris Mattioni: “Jack Wiggins has spent the last three years on the junior varsity. He is reliable, hardworking and rarely misses practice. Jack had a 2-1 JV record in the shortened COVID season last year.”

Andrew Wolak

Andrew is a junior who transferred from New Jersey two years ago. He runs cross country (Cape’s seventh man) and does long sprinting for the winter track team. But Andrew’s top sport is lacrosse, where he is a long stick midfielder. “I just love the kid,” said head lacrosse coach Mark D'Ambrogi. “He just wants to play, wants to learn and wants to get better.” Andrew ran the 400 meters Monday afternoon at the polar bear meet versus Sussex Central, winning the event in a smooth time of 53.87 ahead of Will Harrison of Sussex Central (54.18). “I work on endurance and speed, all to get ready for sprint lacrosse,” said Andrew whose older sister Jackie is a junior playing attack for the University of Notre Dame. Andrew takes all honors classes and one AP class.
