Athletes of the Week Jan. 28

January 28, 2022
Logan Cortijo

Shields Elementary fifth-grader Logan Cortijo plays travel ball for Henlopen Soccer Club and was nominated to play at the Soccer Youth All-American Series in Florida in December, when his team won the championship for its age bracket. Logan was selected from that tournament to play at the final cup of the All-American series in Texas this March. Henlopen Soccer Club Assistant Director of Coaching Patrick Kilby said Logan is very talented and has a bright future. "He loves to play the game, and has grown quite a bit over the years in his level of play and technical abilities. He is a great ambassador for Henlopen Soccer Club as he continues to find ways to improve his game." Logan’s favorite positions are right mid, center mid and striker. Going pro is his ultimate goal, but for now, the best part of the game is having fun with friends. Logan is in the Cape Accelerated Program and part of the Leader in Me initiative at Shields.

Landon Diehl

This Cape sophomore lacrosse player who runs indoor and winter track on the suggestion of coach Ellis Gaulden has discovered she is fast from the 200 through the 400 meters. At the New Balance Games at the storied New York Armory last weekend, Landon ran the anchor leg for the freshmen/sophomore girls’ 4-by-400 relay, helping the Vikings to a second-place finish in a time of 4:39.29, a race where lead-off runner Hannah Maney fell on the opening lap. “I’ve also been running the 4-by-200 this winter,” Landon said. Landon takes all honors and AP classes, and still plans to play lacrosse in the spring.

Dylan Fannin

This 6-foot-4 Cape junior may be a big man by Delaware basketball standards, but he does a lot of his damage outside the paint and is thus a matchup nightmare for opposing coaches. Dylan flashed his considerable versatility in the Vikings’ Jan. 25 matchup with Sussex Tech, tallying 11 points, six rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block. “Big Red” has come into his own in Cape’s last three games, averaging 10 points, five boards, two assists and two steals during that stretch. Coach Shemik Thompson credits Fannin’s rise to a newfound confidence. “It was clear from the tip that he was being more assertive,” Thompson said after a Jan. 18 loss to CR in which Dylan collected 10 points and eight boards. One of his team’s most consistent outside threats, Fannin also finishes strong on the break, displays deceptive quickness, and is a capable rim protector when asked to play that role.

Josh Turek

Josh is an artist and an athlete, an all-state jazz band lead trumpet chair. Josh played the national anthem solo before the Cape versus Smyrna wrestling match. “I was more nervous than I am for a swim meet,” said Josh, who swims four events for the unbeaten Cape boys. Josh swims the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. He is also part of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams. Josh takes all AP classes and wants to go to Washington and Lee, UNC or Virginia Tech and double major in accounting and finance, then go to law school. “I love the arts and athletics,” Josh said.
