Athletes of the Week July 15

July 15, 2016

McKenna Boyle

This rising sixth-grade A student has been a force in the circle on the Cape 9-10 softball all-stars in the District 3 tournament. "She's small in stature, but a beast in the pitching circle," said Cape coach Pat Brown. She has picked up 28 strikeouts in the three District 3 games played, pitching a 10-0 no-hitter against Nanticoke earlier in the week and a 3-2 win over Millsboro. To keep in top shape, she works out at CrossFit Lewes in Nassau Commons. When she’s not on the mound, you can find her playing hockey for the Oranje travel team or swimming at the beach.

Lori Ferguson

A rising junior at Cape, this tough-playing honors student has waited for her turn in the cage for the Vikings hockey team. She has soaked up a ton of knowledge and experience while watching the ones before her. "Lori is awesome," said Cape assistant coach Debbie Windett. "Last year as a sophomore, she backed up Riley [Shields]. She works very hard. She's a smart player. And she has learned not to take it hard if a goal is scored. She bounces right back and keeps working." Lori also plays goalie for the Vikings soccer team in the spring. "I love the thrill of being in the cage," she said. "I like the pressure of having to stop a goal from being scored." “She is a humble kid," said Windett. "We expect great things from her."

Josh Hayman

Josh, 23, of Monroe, La., is an easy glider who cruised to a first-place finish at the Kelly Fritchman 5K in a time of 16:44, a full minute ahead of Ryan Lockett in 17:45. Expecting a bayou or Creole accent, Rob responded to “Where you stay at?” by saying, “I’m from Bear, went to Appoquinimink High School.” He starts a job in Monroe this fall. Rob ran a 4:18 mile in high school, which puts him alongside Cape legends Lance White and Danny Harmon. Josh ran track at Delaware and Syracuse. At ’Cuse he was on a distance medley team that ran 10:42. “Now I’m running 30 minutes a day, which doesn’t get peak results, but I can still run mid 16s in the 5K.”

Lindsay Prettyman

Lindsay, 24, cruised to the women’s title at the Kelly Fritchman 5K July 9 in Lewes in a time of 19:12. She’s a Delaware kid who looks familiar. She was a three-sport starter at Saint Mark’s, playing field hockey and lacrosse, and also running track. In her senior season at Delaware, among a host of honors, she was named Colonial Athletic Association Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. Lindsay was also the UD Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year. She graduated in exercise science with a 3.88 GPA and, now in 2016, she has one year remaining in the school of physical therapy. Lindsay’s boyfriend Josh Hayman was the overall race winner in 16:44.
