Athletes of the Week Oct. 19

October 19, 2018
Jackie Cannon

A senior two-sport athlete playing field hockey and lacrosse, Jackie has been a midfielder her entire career at Cape, but she spends some time at forward in field hockey. “She is back to herself after moving from forward back to midfield,” said coach Kate Austin. “She’s got great speed and skill up the left sideline, playing with a confidence we didn’t see from her last year.” In the last two wins against Polytech and Milford, Jackie was all over the place playing end-to-end hockey. And like all of Cape’s players, she is a threat to score at any time. She is cut in the crossover fitness mode of Cape greats Maggie Delp and Sarah Young. She is the last of the Cannon girls to come through Cape, following Coryn and Mary Grace.

Alia Marshall

At the Oct. 16 game at Champions Stadium, center-midfielder Alia had a typically understated game in a dominant 4-0 win over visiting Milford. She assisted on the first goal by Anna Stancofski, then backhand slapped home the game’s second goal from the top of the circle. Then late in the second half, under the reflected hue of crescent moonglow with a bank of lights out in the far corner, a ball heard but not seen flew in high like a goose on an instrument landing, causing Cape’s tippers to duck as the ball crashed into the back of the cage. “I’d like to get more involved with the offense,” Alia said after the game. All opponents must plan for Alia, then figure out what to do about her.

Mia Nuebling

Freshman runner Mia Nuebling rose to the occasion to place third overall in the five-team dual cross country meet at UD’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment in Lewes. Mia ran 21:18 for 5,000 meters to lead her Cape team to the finish line against Caesar Rodney, which edged the Vikings to capture the meet 26-30 and win the Henlopen Conference dual-meet title. Mia had run for the Seashore Striders, Beacon Middle and Mariner Middle before arriving at Cape, where she just smiles and does what she does best. Mia plans to run indoor track next, when she hopes to break the six-minute indoor mile.

LeeLee Wilson

Alexandra Wilson is a junior Cape field hockey player who has fought her way through a system stacked with great talent. She played junior varsity attack as a freshman on a 10-1-1 team, then moved up to varsity her sophomore season on a 13-2 team that won a state championship. “She put in a lot of time in the off-season to make great improvements in her play,” said coach Kate Austin. “If the ball comes into the circle, she’ll try to get her stick on it.” Late in the game against Milford with Cape leading 3-0, LeeLee received a pass from Jackie Cannon and pushed home a goal into a tight space by the near post. The sidelines went wild. LeeLee is a popular player, just one of those athletes that when she does well, everybody wants to dance.
