Katya Geyer
Katya enters her senior season of cross country as one of the leaders on the always-promising Sussex Academy squad. A gifted runner, Katya’s first sport, however, is the high jump, and this past spring she won her third Division II title in the event – two coming during the last two spring track seasons and another over this past winter track season. Katya appreciates the titles, but believes it is more important for her to grow as a jumper than it is to win. Keeping the long game on her mind, Katya aspires to attend either Yale or Harvard. She believes she is privileged to have the education and educational opportunities she has, and she’s on a never-ending quest to learn as much as she can. She thinks it is valuable athletes to surround themselves with other athletes willing to do whatever it takes to get to a higher level, with a focus on self-improvement, as opposed to comparing stats.
Tyrone Handy
A senior honors student for the Cape football team, Ty made an impact on both sides of the ball in the 33-3 win over Saint Mark’s. Offensively, he rushed for 106 yards on just six carries, while defensively he doubled as a linebacker and safety, recording six tackles and a fumble recovery. “Ty was impressive on both offense and defense against Saint Mark’s,” said coach Chip Knapp. “He anchored our defense, making big plays in the run game.” Assistant coach Ben Ashby praised Ty’s versatility and effort: “Ty is our quarterback on defense. He is a guy who runs through arm tackles and has the speed to break away from defenders for big plays. He gives full effort on offense, defense and special teams, and he’s willing to put his body on the line for the team. He's a big vocal leader for us.” Outside football, Ty enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
Rilyn Lehman
A true freshman on the Michigan State field hockey team, Rilyn signed on to become a Spartan with the understanding she would have to work her way up to her usual never-come-off-the-field minutes. However, she impressed her coaches right away, and in the team's opening game at Louisville, she logged 53 minutes in the 6-1 loss, coming on as a substitute with just under seven minutes played in the first quarter. In the Spartans' second game, Rilyn started in the 5-0 victory over Ohio University. It's no surprise to Sussex Academy fans who watched Lehman work relentlessly, whether when the turf was simmering hot or when the fall air turned frigid, as one of the captains of the Seahawks. If the legs feed the wolf, Rilyn gives her inner beast plenty to feast on, outrunning her mark to a spot more often than not to win back possession.
Jameson Tingle
An honors student and junior quarterback for the Cape football team, Jameson lit up the Legends Stadium turf in the 33-3 win over visiting Saint Mark’s. He completed 9-of-14 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 117 yards on seven carries with two more scores. “Jay was able to show his dual-threat abilities this game and why he will be difficult to stop this season,” said Cape coach Chip Knapp. Off the field, Jameson is a member of Morgan’s Message, Henlopen Leaders and the National Honor Society. Last year, he earned second-team all-conference honors in football, was named Henlopen Conference Player of the Year and third-team all-state in basketball and finished as a state finalist in the high jump for the track team. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf with his father and friends.
