Azafrán returns to Lewes with Olive & Oats

Popular café open for breakfast and lunch on Market Street
June 21, 2017

When Richard Steele decided to close Café Azafrán in Lewes in 2014, he said the goal was always to return one day.

Though he enjoyed the town and all the customers, the business just wasn’t working in the original Market Street space, so he decided to downsize and focus on his Rehoboth Beach restaurant.

But when the former Half Full and Patty’s Deli spot became available, he said, it was time to return.

“We’re happy to be back,” Steele said. “I think people seem pretty happy we’re back too.”

Olive & Oats by Azafrán opened earlier this month in the small storefront on Market Street across the street from Azafran’s original Lewes space, now occupied by The Gate House.

“When I was leaving [Lewes], Patty’s was just about to come in,” said Steele, who always thought the space was perfect for his business. “It wasn’t the right time, though. It was a little early to come in here and do what I wanted to do.”

With Patty Jacobs closing the deli to focus her efforts on her Georgetown shop, the unit became available, and this time Steele was ready to move forward.

“It’s hard to get in here,” he said. “I’ve always liked this spot.”

Olive & Oats will be open for breakfast and lunch, offering a completely different menu than what customers will find at Café Azafrán in Rehoboth Beach. Breakfast includes pastries, bagels, frittatas and baked oatmeal. For lunch, Steele offers salads, wraps and paninis.

A more traditional breakfast is offered at Café Azafrán, with omelets, egg dishes, French toast and waffles. And whereas breakfast is offered only four days a week at Azafrán, it’s served daily at the new Olive & Oats.

Olive & Oats, 113 W. Market St., is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with hours expanding soon. Steele said he plans to stay open seven days a week year round. For more information about Olive & Oats, go to cafeazafran.com or call 302-313-4701.
