Bayhealth nationally recognized for physician well-being efforts
Bayhealth was among only 44 health systems nationwide recently named to the American Medical Association’s 2021 Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program.
This AMA distinction recognizes health systems with a demonstrated commitment to improving physician satisfaction and well-being through efforts to combat work-related stress and burnout.
“We are deeply proud of the hard work and dedication of our Bayhealth medical staff while providing exceptional patient care. We are committed to supporting their well-being. It’s gratifying to be recognized for the steps Bayhealth has taken and an honor to be named alongside other national healthcare leaders,” said Dr. Gary Siegelman, Bayhealth senior vice president, chief medical officer and GME-designated institutional official. “We will continue our efforts to help our physicians thrive, experience joy in their work and in turn provide optimal care to their patients.”
Launched in 2019, the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program uses scoring criteria such as commitment, assessment, leadership, efficiency of practice environment, and teamwork to evaluate health systems nationwide. Recipients were chosen based on documented measures that reduce work-related burnout through system-level drivers. A national AMA study of physicians and other clinicians during the pandemic found that 38 percent self-reported experiencing anxiety or depression, while 43 percent suffered from work overload and 49 percent had burnout.
“The recognition program offers a roadmap to guide health system leaders who are interested, engaged and committed in efforts to fight the root causes of burnout in the healthcare workforce,” said Dr. Christine Sinsky, AMA vice president of professional satisfaction. “The 44 health systems recognized this year by the AMA are creating momentum in the healthcare community for a united commitment to wide-spanning change in the culture of medicine that emphasizes professional well-being in healthcare.”
