Betty Gooch was a relentless unsung hero in the lives of so many Shields Elementary School students over her career, as well as a friend and supporter of colleagues, who have missed her terribly since she passed away in June 2012 from cancer.
"We all wanted to do something, so I thought why not a courtyard and plaque from the Seashore Striders?" said Tim Bamforth, a Shields teacher and director of the running club.
"I cleared it with Jenny Nauman, the principal, who cleared it with Building and Grounds, then contacted Richard Bell of Interlocking Pavers, who showed up the next day and it just got done," Bamforth said. "It's really a perfect way to remember her every day."
Family members and some Shields school friends gathered for the unveiling of the project Sept. 3.
